Have we truly achieved justice in our society? Are all Americans treated equally as first class citizens? Have we learned to love our neighbors regardless of their race, color, gender, age, class, sexual orientation or creed?
Muslim Americans who are stopped each time they go through a security check point- probably think we have a way to go. Poor children who go to schools with leaky roofs and barbwire fences - probably think we have a way to go. Lesbian and gay families who are spit on as they walk their children to school, who are not given the same legal protections of other families - probably think we have a way to go.
We all should heed the message of Dr King's life:
"We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone."While I was watching CNN this afternoon, they were interviewing one of the young girls who marched in Birmingham, AL with Dr King. She said that before they were set out to march, she and her compatriots went through extensive training about what they might undergo and the challenges they would face. They were told that they had to be 100% committed to non-violence or they should not participate. As he said outside Selma, "If you cannot commit yourself to the militancy of non violence, do not get in the line, do not get in the line." Therefore, when the police inevitably sent forth their dogs and their fire hoses, the marchers would not be afraid and that they would not retaliate - then the world would see the brutality of segregation.
"I've seen too much hate to want to hate, myself, and every time I see it, I say to myself, hate is too great a burden to bear. Somehow we must be able to stand up against our most bitter opponents and say: "We shall match your capacity to inflict suffering by our capacity to endure suffering. We will meet your physical force with soul force. Do to us what you will and we will still love you.... Throw us into jail and we shall still love you. Bomb our homes and threaten our children, and we shall still love you. Send your hooded perpetrators of violence at midnight hour to beat us till we are half-dead, and we shall still love you. Be assured that we shall wear you down by our capacity to suffer. One day we shall win freedom, but not only for ourselves. We shall so appeal to your hearts and conscience that we shall win you over in the process and our victory shall be a double victory."
These videos helped change the conscience of America. When they saw how cruel segregation was, they wanted to change- because the change was already taking place in their heart.
Dr King explains it well here ...
These lessons are still valuable today, especially in the context of the LGBT civil rights movement. LGBT people have long experienced hate crimes and death threats. No one can forget Matthew Shepard being strung up along a barb wire fence and beat to death, or Lawrence King who was gunned down at school because he was gay.
Here is an excerpt from For The Bible Tells Me So,
Most of the protests I have attended were organized by clergy from the local United Methodist and Episcopal Churches, who undoubtedly look up to MLK's civil rights movement. I just wish that message resonated with all of the protesters. I'd like to see more signs that say, "Thank You To Mormons Who Voted No" instead of "NO to Mormon Bigots"
Some people think that the Civil Rights leaders with the 60's would be appalled that "their language has been hijacked" by the LGBT civil rights movement. However, they should listen to the words of the people who marched with Dr. King.
"I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the rights of lesbian and gay people and I should stick to the issue of racial justice... But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King, Jr., said, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere' ... I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream to make room at the table of brotherhood and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people.
Gay and lesbian people have families, and their families should have legal protection, whether by marriage or civil union. A constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages is a form of gay bashing, and it would do nothing at all to protect traditional marriages."
- Coretta Scott King, civil rights leader and widow of Martin Luther King, Jr. at the 25th anniversary luncheon of Lambda Defense and Education Fund, March 31, 1998
"Gays and lesbians have a more difficult time than we did. We had our families and our churches on our side. All too often, they have neither."
- Rev. Dr. James Lawson, a distinguished United Methodist pastor who worked side-by-side with Dr. King training the young people who staged the lunch counter sit-ins and the Freedom Rides.
"Some say they are uncomfortable with the thought of gays and lesbians marrying. But our rights as Americans do not depend on the approval of others. Our rights depend on us being Americans."
-John Lewis, Congressman and was a young leader of the Civil Rights Movement. He was 23 years old when he spoke at the 1963 March on Washington.
"That's why when I am asked, 'Are gay rights civil rights?' my answer is always, 'Of course they are.' Rights for gays and lesbians are not 'special rights' in any way. It isn't "special" to be free from discrimination -- that's an ordinary, universal entitlement of citizenship."- Julian Bond speaking at the 2008 Creating Change Conference. Bond was a founding member of SNCC in 1960. While a student at Morehouse College in Atlanta, he helped organize a sit-in movement at Atlanta University. Since 1998, Julian Bond has served as Chairman of the Board of the NAACP.
"I am still not a political person, but I am proud that Richard's and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, black or white, young or old, gay or straight seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That's what Loving, and loving, are all about."
- Mildred Loving, along with her husband, Richard, were plantiffs in the historic Supreme Court decision "Loving v. Virginia" which overturned state laws preventing two persons of different races from getting married.
"We are a retired Lutheran pastor and spouse, whose oldest son was born gay, and who at the age of 37 died with AIDS. Having spent years coming to grips with and trying to understand the concept of homosexuality, we have ultimately come to recognize this condition as a special gift of God conveyed to some of his carefully selected daughters and sons. We have come to know personally thousands of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons. And we have also become convinced that this condition is part of the 'creative given' rather than a personal choice by those individuals."
-Rev. Bob Graetz and his wife Jeannie in a letter to Catholic Bishop Daniel Pilarczyk. Bob Graetz was the only white minister to march with Martin Luther King Jr. during the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He and his wife Jeannie served an all-black Lutheran congregation in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955. Because of their participation in the boycott, their home was bombed twice.
Some people suggest that the LGBT civil rights activists should wait until America is ready, but Dr. King believed in the fierce urgency of now, that it was "no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off, or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism." As he most eloquently stated, "If you can't fly, run. If you can't run, walk. If you can't walk, crawl - but by all means keep moving."
Many forget that Dr. King stood for more than just civil rights, he stood for total social justice. When asked whether it was politically expedient for him to oppose the war in Vietnam, Dr. King replied:
“‘I am sorry sir, you don’t know me. I am not a consensus leader. And I do not determine what is right and wrong by looking at the budget of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference or by taking a Gallup poll of the majority opinion. Ultimately a genuine leader is not a of consensus but a molder of consensus.’
“On some positions cowardice asks the question, ‘is it safe?’
“Expediency asks the question, ‘is it is politic?’
“Vanity asks the question, ‘is it is popular?’
“But conscience asks the question, ‘is it right?’
“There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but he must do it because conscience tells him it is right. And that is where I stand today and that is where I hope you will continue to stand so that we can speed up the day when justice will roll down like waters all over the world and righteousness like a mighty stream. And we will speed up the day when men will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks and nations will not rise up against nations neither they will not start a war anymore and I close by saying as we sing in the old Negro spiritual,
“I ain’t going to study war no more.”
And it was shortly after he started vocally opposing the war, that he was assassinated. May we all show the amount of courage and civility in our movements for peace and equality.
God Bless Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr, and all freedom fighters of today.

Just like you sodomites who molest straight children, physically assault Christians and burn Christian churches because you don't like the way Christians vote.
Whatever you think, you will not be able to change God's Word and will one day have to pay the price for not believing what God has written.
Leviticus 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
Romans 1:22-27
V22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, V23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
V24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
V25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, Who is blessed for ever. Amen.
V26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
V27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
SAY THIS PRAYER: Dear Jesus, I am a sinner and am headed to eternal hell because of my sins. I believe you died on the cross to take away my sins and to take me to heaven. Jesus, I ask you now to come into my heart and take away my sins and give me eternal life. http://www.armyofgod.com
"V22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, V23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things."
Isn't that basically what Fred Phelps does on a daily basis?
Before you go telling off others on how to be good Christians, take a look at yourself first. You, who preaches that hate and fear of your fellow man is a "Christian" thing to do, who thinks the law does not apply to you because you're "on a mission from God" to mold everyone to YOUR exact specifications, because anyone who differs from you is obviously godless, even if they are fellow Christians.
And you wanna talk about violence and things getting blown up? How about abortion clinics that get bombed, or gynecologists who get sniped in their homes, people beaten nearly or to death because they are of a different religion or love somebody we "Christians" think is wrong. Ah, but they're not real Christians, are they? I'll agree with you on that one, no Christian who thinks violence is the way to go is doing it right, but when a church gets blown up, oh yeah, ALL gay people are all for that one. Right, and the Pope's Jewish. *rolls eyes*
Don't kid yourself, you can justify your hate for them in anyway you like, but God is probably up there right now giving himself the face palm over how vicious his children are to each other.
He probably shouldn't have called it the Tree of Knowledge, more like the Tree of Complete Idiocy. T.T
The above post really proves that although we have come a long way, we still have far, far to go...
Hello,
I would like to invite people to read this article about the roles of homosexuals in the Bible. http://www.gentleshepherdmcc.com/bible.htm
I'll be back later to comment further.
Let's remember, we are aiming for a double victory, and we must love our enemies as ourselves.
Great post Katie.
On a side note... to those reading this blog, please be aware that "Reverend" Donald Spitz is a very hateful man- obviously hateful towards homosexuals, is opposed to abortion and yet supports murderers (hypocritical much?), and is racist (for more see here: http://www.splcenter.org/intel/intelreport/article.jsp?aid=72).
He also likes to post the same hateful lies on websites.... at least be more creative with your hatred Spritz, rather than cutting and pasting.
I would put this man in a category with the Westboro Baptist church.Free speech protects him, yet we don't have to listen to his filthy mouth.
Donald Spitz,
After reading your comment to Katie's blog I decided to spend some time pondering some of your peculiar opinions. I followed the link at the end of your comment only to discover that it was the home page of the "Army of God" organization - a Christian Nationalist group with the extreme view that murdering abortion clinicians is ok.
Completely separate from whether or not one agrees with the issue of abortion is how one lives out their view. The site you referenced states that Paul Jennings Hill ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Jennings_Hill ) and others are heros for killing abortion clinicians. Civil, non-violent expression of one's views is vastly different from murdering someone because they "murdered" someone else. Furthermore, the United States government does not view abortions to be murder. This probably only fuels your motivation and willingness to disobey secular law in order to follow your religious beliefs.
So let us examine precisely what "God has written" about murder. Exodus 20:13 and Deuteronomy 5:17 clearly state that you shall not kill. If you beleive that aborting a fetus is murder then fine, but it is not Biblical to justify the murder of abortion clinicians either.
Ah, but you may state, "Murder is justified if they deserved it." To such a statement one must question, "Would Jesus murder an abortion clinician?" John 8:1-11 describes Jesus's response to a similar dilemma:
1Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
2And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
3And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
4They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
5Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
6This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
7So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
8And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
9And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
10When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
11She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
It is apparent that Jesus would not murder an abortion clinician either. Perhaps you are thinking, "Jesus would not but Jesus was perfect and therefor could not sin. We are not perfect and are instructed to carry out God's will." However, such a view would be blatently ignoring the Apostle Paul who wrote much of the New Testament. As you are aware, Paul was an orthodox Jew who murdered countless Christians because he saw them as blasphemers of God. However, Paul converted to Christianity and never harmed another human being even if he found their actions to be morally dispicable. Also, one must consider that Jesus condemned his follower who cut off another man's ear when "the multitude" came to take Jesus to Pilate. (Luke 22:50-51) Who is more innocent and pure than Jesus? Thus, if Jesus did not want anyone to murder for his sake then how is it moral to murder abortion clinicians?
Concerning your stance on abortion, I think your good intentions have been hijacked by hate. I am not stating that abortion is morally wrong or right. Rather, I am urging you not to support that which you hate - murder.
Finally, you stated, "Just like you sodomites who molest straight children, physically assault Christians and burn Christian churches because you don't like the way Christians vote." Again, I think you have allowed your good intentions to be hijacked by hate. You seem to think that only heterosexuality is morally right but you have mixed this view with unrelated and unjustified sins of others. Supporting same-sex marriage is no more related to the molesting of children, assaulting of Christians or the burning of churches than not supporting same-sex marriage is.
Express your anti-abortion views peacefuly:
http://www.nrlc.org/
Christians who support same-sex marriage:
http://www.geocities.com/jhazelbaker2/religion.htm
Galatians 5:19-23, New International Version: 19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
Ergo, even if homosexuality qualifies as sexual immorality, you're obligated to love and be good to those people as you are any of your fellow men. Otherwise, even if you're right, neither of you will inherit the Kingdom of God.
1 Peter 2 1:3, New International Version: "1Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3now that you have tasted that the Lord is good."
I'd like to point out that hypocrisy thing. Claiming to be a pro-life organization and then proclaiming murder to be "morally justified" is comically bad logic. So, what, so long as a fetus can't think for itself, you're allowed to kill people on its behalf? Suppose, when that fetus grows up, he/she decides to become a doctor - do you get to kill it then, or just when it performs a medical procedure you don't like? What's next there, Reverend? Will you get to kill cardiologists because they take hearts from brain-dead people and put them in other people? The bodies are technically still alive until the heart is harvested, even though the person is unresponsive and has no chance of recovery.
Leviticus 1:2-13, New International Version: "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'When any of you brings an offering to the LORD, bring as your offering an animal from either the herd or the flock.
3 " 'If the offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he is to offer a male without defect. He must present it at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting so that it will be acceptable to the LORD. 4 He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him. 5 He is to slaughter the young bull before the LORD, and then Aaron's sons the priests shall bring the blood and sprinkle it against the altar on all sides at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. 6 He is to skin the burnt offering and cut it into pieces. 7 The sons of Aaron the priest are to put fire on the altar and arrange wood on the fire. 8 Then Aaron's sons the priests shall arrange the pieces, including the head and the fat, on the burning wood that is on the altar. 9 He is to wash the inner parts and the legs with water, and the priest is to burn all of it on the altar. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the LORD.
10 " 'If the offering is a burnt offering from the flock, from either the sheep or the goats, he is to offer a male without defect. 11 He is to slaughter it at the north side of the altar before the LORD, and Aaron's sons the priests shall sprinkle its blood against the altar on all sides. 12 He is to cut it into pieces, and the priest shall arrange them, including the head and the fat, on the burning wood that is on the altar. 13 He is to wash the inner parts and the legs with water, and the priest is to bring all of it and burn it on the altar. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the LORD."
This sound like what you did the last time you went to church? I think you missed a few pages in that book there, Reverend. There's an awful lot of stuff to do regarding the proper procedure for offerings - I hope you know a good rancher.
Leviticus 11:1-10, New International Version: 1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 2 "Say to the Israelites: 'Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat: 3 You may eat any animal that has a split hoof completely divided and that chews the cud.
4 " 'There are some that only chew the cud or only have a split hoof, but you must not eat them. The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you. 5 The coney, though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof; it is unclean for you. 6 The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof; it is unclean for you. 7 And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. 8 You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.
9 " 'Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams, you may eat any that have fins and scales. 10 But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales—whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water—you are to detest."
I hope you've never eaten shrimp, ham or alligator there, pal.
Just because I like the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America I'm not obligated to not think you're an idiot.
I offer to the simple truths of this world.
GOD is a force, an embodiment of all things. GOD created the earth and all things. Man is a creation of GOD. It is truth that GOD is all knowing, all powerful, all merciful, and does all for a reason and with a purpose in mind. To question or to hate on one of gods creations is to question or hate on the wisdom of GOD.
If GOD made a man gay he did so for a reason. Do not hate, or question this. Accept that GOD did this and that GOD loves all of his creations. Rejoice in the fact that you were created and are a reflection of GOD. Remember that everyone, no matter who, or what, is a reflection of GOD.
@ Ajay
Yes, and I suppose we do have to love bigots too. I think I am going to start praying for them at Church. Maybe light a St Jude candle.
Hatred and bigotry is a disease, and you'll catch it if you hate back.
So Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr's dream does live on, in all of us!
Katie, just this morning in Bible study, the beatitude, "blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake" - righteousness being a deep faithfulness to humanity, as God is faithful and will not let us go. This kind of righteousness transcends all the usual boundaries we draw. When we cross those boundaries in faithfulness, the boundary-drawers cry out in pain - they love their boundaries, and define themselves by who's in and who's out ... sadly, they put themselves on the outs with God - they know it, they feel, but are trapped in their own narrow trench of self-love and self-loathing (they go hand-in-hand). Keep crossing the boundaries - it's a righteous thing to do, and pray for those who persecute you ... it's our greatest power - greater than all the powers of violence and vilification. Hats off to you Katie for keeping your balance! After awhile, just delete the hateful stuff - it's not worth the heartburn nor the space.
it's great that the calmer people are out there, but I have to say: I think it's still OK if you're angry about all this injustice toward people who are gay. It's not ideal, but it's not by definition wrong to be angry at being unfairly put down and harassed in the USA, "land of the free".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnXI99BKZwg
While I believe it is more than understandable for the LGBT community to be angry about all the injustice, its how you channel that anger that matters. If you channel it in negative ways, then we'll get no where. If we channel it in constructive ways to do outreach etc ... then we'll start getting somewhere.
If people know they don't have the diplomatic skills, they should probably stand back a bit and let those who do have that capacity for patience etc to do the public work.
But yeah, I agree ... it is more than okay to be angry.
